Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral violence remains a significant challenge in many democracies, including Nigeria, where political tensions often escalate during election periods. In regions such as Yobe State, electoral violence not only disrupts the electoral process but also undermines social harmony and post-election reconciliation efforts. Potiskum, a key local government area in Yobe, has witnessed instances of electoral violence that have had lasting effects on its community's stability and governance. This study aims to investigate the causes and consequences of electoral violence in Potiskum, with a particular focus on how such violence affects the post-election reconciliation process. The research will also explore the role of both governmental and non-governmental efforts in restoring peace and ensuring electoral integrity (Adamu & Mohammed, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral violence is a pervasive problem in Nigeria and remains a barrier to peaceful electoral processes and democratic consolidation. In Potiskum, instances of violence during elections have significantly undermined both the credibility of the electoral process and the post-election reconciliation efforts. The scars left by violence often create divisions that persist long after the election results are announced. This study seeks to assess the impact of electoral violence on post-election reconciliation and to evaluate the effectiveness of efforts aimed at fostering peace and unity in the aftermath of elections (Sa’id & Abdulrahman, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the causes of electoral violence in Potiskum Local Government, Yobe State.
  2. To assess the impact of electoral violence on post-election reconciliation in Potiskum.
  3. To evaluate the role of government and civil society organizations in mitigating the effects of electoral violence and promoting peace.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the main causes of electoral violence in Potiskum Local Government?
  2. How does electoral violence affect post-election reconciliation in Potiskum?
  3. What role do government and civil society organizations play in post-election peacebuilding efforts in Potiskum?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Electoral violence in Potiskum is primarily caused by political rivalry, ethnic tensions, and inadequate security measures.
  2. Electoral violence negatively affects post-election reconciliation and prolongs social divisions.
  3. Government and civil society interventions play a significant role in restoring peace and promoting post-election reconciliation in Potiskum.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the relationship between electoral violence and post-election reconciliation, contributing to the development of strategies for improving electoral integrity and fostering peace in Nigerian elections. This research will also be useful to policymakers, electoral bodies, and civil society organizations working to prevent violence and promote national unity in post-election periods.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus specifically on Potiskum Local Government, Yobe State, examining the causes, impact, and reconciliation efforts surrounding electoral violence. The study may be limited by the availability of data from affected communities and by the challenge of assessing long-term reconciliation outcomes.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Electoral Violence: Any form of violence or intimidation used to influence the outcome of an election or disrupt the electoral process.
  • Post-Election Reconciliation: Efforts aimed at restoring peace and unity among communities after the conclusion of an election, especially after instances of violence.
